Chew Lips

After forming in early 2008, and writing ten songs in their first rehearsal session, the band played its first gig at a friends' house party in New Cross on May 10, 2008. After performing just fourteen live shows, they were asked by BBC DJ Steve Lamacq to feature on the BBC Introducing stage at the Electric Proms in October 2008. Lamacq has continued to support the band who, to date, have won his Rebel Playlist vote more times than any other act. The name Chew Lips comes from a character in the Brendan Behan book Borstal Boy. Chew Lips have attracted celebrity support from the likes of Lauren Laverne and comedian Mathew Horne who has praised the band numerous times via his Twitter account. Chew Lips released their debut album 'Unicorn' on Jan 25th which received 4/5 stars in Q. The first single from Unicorn was a track called 'Play Together' (released Jan 18th), which was remixed by WahWah and reached no 5 in the club charts. Chew Lips have appeared in a number of 'ones to watch' lists for 2010 including NME, The Fly, Nylon, Grazia and Q.

Chew Lips has been described as "minimal dance-pop" and "coupling techno beats with smart-mouthed edgy vocals", influenced by LCD Soundsystem and Prince and "Classic Pop",The Guardian said they "haven't yet mastered the killer hook or knockout chorus," but NME say "They've been together barely 12 months, but they've already got the capital in their pockets and have (in 'Solo') produced one of the most exciting singles of the year." The Fly magazine, in reviewing the Solo single, said that Chew Lips made "electronic pop that will get wedged in your brain from first listen"
